Online Webinar – Offered by: Cadence Management Corp. ( REP 1101 )
Duration: 1 Hour Credits: 1 PDU or 1 CDU Category A
Presentation Date: May 19, 2010

Negotiating can be a fun and productive endeavor. Discover the power of simply asking for something. Get something in exchange for every concession. Complete project managers owe it to themselves and their partners to engage in negotiations. Now is the right time to view everything as negotiable.

The results delivered by projects usually depend upon what you NEGOTIATE

Successful project leaders explore a perspective, principles, tools, and recommendations to achieve better results through the power of negotiations. They avoid being set up for failure by recognizing and developing skills that lead to greater success.

Everything is negotiable, both at work and in everyday lives. It is in our best interests, and for your team and organization, that you embrace negotiating as a requisite skill…and implement it dutifully.

Learn:

  • The power of negotiation in every day interactions — from problem solving to requirements, to resources and more
  • How you can improve your negotiating skill by ten percent, and what you can achieve by making tiny changes for big effect
  • The 10 Basic Rules to developing your own negotiating skills, and how you can reap the benefits in your project work immediately

I first took a weekend negotiating course over 20 years ago. The course changed my life. I learned it is only necessary to get a 5 to 10 percent improvement in the outcome of each negotiation for improved negotiating skills to prove their merit.

The objective is not to win every negotiation; the objective is to consistently achieve better outcomes for both parties in the negotiation.

I learned the ten rules of negotiating in that course and have applied them ever since. The project world includes all kinds of personalities, who have various styles and approaches to relationships. The rules help me get through all interactions, whether I am inside or outside my comfort zone. – Randy Englund

Presenter: Randall L. Englund, is an executive consultant for the Englund Project Management Consultancy, and has spent most of his career in Silicon Valley. He’s co-author of three best selling business books, Creating The Project Office, Creating an Environment for Successful Projects, 2nd Edition, and his latest book Project Sponsorship: Achieving Management Commitment for Project Success. Randall teaches project management at California universities. While Randy has an MBA in management and a BS in electrical engineering, his real education came from 22 years at Hewlett-Packard Company, where he was a senior project manager, new product developer, and internal consultant at the corporate Project Management Initiative. What does LEAN mean to you?

Lean-thinking is the combination of applying known software development principles with lean-management and lean-learning work in order to speed time-to-market while improving quality and lowering costs. It provides insights from project initiation through development, deployment and consumption by the customer (internal in IT and external in product companies). Lean focuses on helping people improve the environment and systems in which they work.

Introduction to Kanban:

Kanban has been called a set of tools by many people. Kanban, however, is much more than that. Kanban is more a mindset and approach than the tools it is known for such as limiting WIP, explicit policies and including management. This webinar is a brief introduction to the lean-thinking behind the Kanban practices.

Kanban is the next generation of Agile methods, built on a lean foundation. This method is now applied to knowledge work such as software development — domains in which “inventory” isn’t visible but its effect is still felt. If your organization struggles with the inventory of unfinished work, bugs and other quality issues, while you are under pressure to deliver faster and more frequently, you may benefit from applying the Kanban method.

Kanban is based on Lean Product Development flow and provides insights into how to solve many software development challenges while being inclusive of management. It can be implemented at a pace of the development organization’s choosing. making it much more flexible than other agile systems. Kanban is meant to be adapted to the particular needs of each organization.

For more information visit Janice’s website Kanban 101 It is a compedium of her own quest to learn about Kanban in order to assist people in getting started.
