Live Webinar – February 7th, 2013 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm EST
Presented by: Eclipse Project Portfolio Management
Duration: 1 hour 1 PDUs Credits: Category C 1 PDU- Free PDU

Resource availability is a key source of negative risk to projects. Even if your project has well-defined scope and validated activity effort estimates, if the resources you are provided are working on multiple projects and operational activities, predictability of schedule outcomes is poor.

This webinar will review some options for responding to this risk from both a systemic and project-focused perspective.

LESSONS LEARNED:

  1. Understand the criticality of uncertain resource availability on project outcomes.
  2. Learn which approaches for getting better knowledge of resource availability won’t work in your organization.
  3. Gain a better understanding of the pros and cons of the practices that can successfully incorporate resource availability uncertainty into project planning and tracking.

PDU Category C documentation details:

Process Groups: Initiating & Executing, Planning

Knowledge Areas: 11 – Risk

  • 11.1 Plan Risk Management
  • 11.2 Identify Risks
  • 11.5 Plan Risk Responses

Live Webinar February 6th, 2013 – 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm EST
Presented by: Human Capital Institute
Webinar Duration: 1 Hour Credits: 1 Category C PDU – Free PDU

Team Based Work Structures
Continue To Grow In Importance.

In fact:

  • 81% of Fortune 500 companies are building at least partially team-based organizations.
  • More than half of Fortune 500 companies use some formal work teams as part of their operations.
  • Managers spend 40% -50% of their time in team meetings.
  • As many as 17 million meetings occur daily.

While effective teams can produce extraordinary results, studies have found that an estimated 50% of self -directed teams result in failure (unable to meet goals)

Why do so some teams get excellent results
While other, seemingly similar teams, struggle?

There are many documented reasons why teams succeed, and why teams fail. Most of them are based on a team’s ability to develop strong relationships, build trust and common vision. Studies have shown that teams are most creative and productive when they achieve high levels of participation, cooperation and collaboration- all interactive behaviors.

The webinar will share essential characteristics of teams and the key elements of high performing teams, focusing in on the critical components of:

  • Team personality/culture
  • Diversity to encourage creativity and innovation
  • Communication and collaboration
  • Trust and respect

Behavioral data can be a valuable asset to improve communication between team members, positively effecting trust and collaboration. The data provided from behavioral assessments can collectively identify the culture of the team and the impact on individual members. It can help to identify the “key difference” between a high performing team and one that is not meeting their goals.

As Agile grows, people who learned about it at a 5th, 6th or 7th degree of separation from the “founding fathers” of Agile sometimes see it as process or a science type method. That sentiment about Agile isn’t 100% incorrect, but the reality is that Agile is much more at its core. It is based on a core perspective from which process/methods flow out.

Agile is about seeing the world,
Conducting yourself,
Working in a team, and …
Doing actual work in an Agile way.

Sounds like a cult, right? Well, in some cases it is. But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If a “utopian” work environment is something you are looking to be a part of, Agile can possibly take you there.

Remember the four basic values:

  • Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
  • Working software over comprehensive documentation
  • Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
  • Responding to change over following a plan

If done right you can gain high morale and develop a highly productive work environment (maybe even utopian depending on your perspective). The interesting thing about these values though, is that they pretty much run counter to how we currently conduct business, and how human beings naturally think, act and react.

Learning Objectives:

In this presentation you will learn about the methods around these four basic values and learn about the change management challenges that come with agile adoption. We will touch on what Scrum means, how to conduct an iteration, what is a task board, how to do a proper retrospective, and how planning is handled in Agile. On top of that we will review government adaption of agile and use our experience with the VA as a semi-case study on Agile in government. Finally, the topic of certification will be reviewed with a detailed discussion of both Scrum Alliance certification programs and the new PMI-ACP credential.

This session will give you a working knowledge of agile and allow you dig deeper into its methods and practices with a solid, foundational understanding. We will also discuss Federal government policies and procedures and how those are impacted by agile deployment.
