Agile is all about the flow of work through a system and how that work is efficiently and effectively ‘managed’.

Most organizations are adept at managing the flow of work at the Team or Project level but many struggle with too much Work In Progress (WIP) at the Program/Portfolio level.

Often times there are too many projects in flight and finite resources are spread across multiple work streams. What first appears as an efficient form of resource utilization is in reality the equivalent of an organization running in place.

Many Things Get Started But Few Get Done

Managing your Portfolio using a Kanban approach is a more effective way to manage the flow of work by making the amount of work visible, limiting WIP to maximize the number of things completed and using a pull system to only pull new work into the Portfolio when there is actual capacity to effectively complete it.
