Live Webinar June 13th, 2014 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm EDT
Duration: 1 hour webinar Credits: 1 PDU Category A – $15 USD PDU
Presented by: Solutions Cube Group (REP 2451)

This webinar is third in a five part series series on “Strategic Planning” by Solutions Cube.  Although this module is a part of the series – each module in the series can be taken individually.

As organizations fund and initiate project after project, teams often work off of sketchy project charters, unsure of the focus or expected outcome of each effort.

Often times, teams feel that the list of prioritized projects is a result of random selection and are left wondering how the project fit into the overall corporate direction, if at all.

What’s lacking are the tools and techniques for clearly describing high level changes the organization wants to achieve and lower level department goals that will provide purpose and focus for the upcoming year.

Staff members who are engaged in establishing the future direction of the organization or individual departments within the organization, need to leverage Mission and Vision Statements and the organizational assessment to create Objectives and Goals.

In order for Objectives and Goals to be valuable and useful to everyone they must be SMART.

Ambiguity and broad vague statements of direction serve no other means than to add confusion for future project activities.

Attend this presentation to learn how to make your objectives and goals SMART.

In this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Transform the Mission and Vision statements into measurable and realistic Objectives
  • Understand how to document Goals specific for each Function of the Organization •Use techniques for ensuring that the new Goals are relevant and in scope for the Strategic Plan

One way to improve the management of international development projects is to learn from common problems that happened on past projects.

The World Bank does ex-post evaluations on all projects and publishes those results every year. Interestingly those problems are quite consistent year after year and project after project.

Also interestingly these problems are very similar to problems encountered on projects in the United States.

This webinar will present these common problems and provide specific actions that can help prevent problems and lead to better management and results.

Presenter:  Robert Youker (LinkedIn profile) is an independent trainer and consultant in Project Management with more than thirty-five years of experience in the field. Live Webinar June 13th, 2014 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM EDT
Duration: 1 Hour Credits: 1 PDU Category C Free
Presented by : O’Reilly Webcasts

We’ve seen lengthy discussions about the position of women in technology for the past several months, to the point where Wired is covering debates about civility on the LKML.

While it’s been useful to raise awareness of issues within the open source and technical communities, I haven’t seen anyone discussing why evaluating and checking one’s privilege is actually good for the individual.

In this talk, Leslie Hawthorn will discuss why it’s worth your while to understand your own innate privilege – or, as she likes to think of it, ‘stuff’ you get that other people don’t – and how doing so will make you more successful in your career and as a human being.

Amongst other matters, Leslie will discuss:

  • Understanding bias – what it is, why it is and why it is worth examining your biases
  • How to handle it when other people are “angry”
  • How to be a useful ally and why this makes your way much smoother
  • How to ask for more information without being an uneducated jerk
  • How to have more useful conversations with each person you meet

The purpose of this talk is to reexamine the topic through the lens of concrete things individuals can do to check their privilege – and to put it to work serving themselves and others.

Presenter: Leslie Hawthorn (LinkedIn profile) an internationally known, speaker and author, Leslie Hawthorn has spent the past decade creating, cultivating and enabling open source communities. She created the world’s first initiative to involve pre-university students in open source software development, launched Google’s #2 Developer Blog, received an O’Reilly Open Source Award in 2010 and gave a few great talks on many things open source. In August 2013, she joined Elasticsearch as Community Manager, where she leads the company’s developer relations efforts.
