PMI® Quality Community of Practice: Our mission is to increase members understanding of Project Management Quality by exploring the Quality Processes as defined in the PMBOK and encouraging members to network by sharing experiences, knowledge and tools.

Product quality in a professional services organization, like consulting engineering, is very different than in production operations.

For professional services, every product is unique in some way.

Quality is determined not only by how a closely a product meets objective criteria, but also by highly subjective criteria that can change over time. And being known for producing quality products is not only about doing extraordinary things, but executing routine things in a consistent and predictable way.

This talk provides an overview of the consulting industry and the unique challenges involved in delivering quality products in the industry. It then walks through a step-by-step process that was developed and used to systemically evaluate the quality practices and performance of a consulting engineering firm.

This organizational improvement effort provided deep learning, not only about quality, but how to systemically improve the quality performance of a company. The learning will be shared, along with practical do’s and don’ts that were gathered from the development effort.

Presenter: Brad Hermanson (LinkedIn profile) Brad has served in a leadership role directing project delivery operations and with his 30+ years experience  Brad has either managed or provided PM support to some of the most complex environmental projects in the northwest.  He served as Director of Project Delivery and Quality and is a frequent and enthusiastic speaker and trainer. As a  risk management trainer he has been the keynote presenter at numerous PMI roundtables.

The world economy loses hundreds of billions of dollars annually because of failed IT/software projects.

Most managers focus almost exclusively on budget, schedule, and performance to determine project success.

Missing from most equations is the Cost of Quality. COQ is a powerful metric you can apply to every project and improvement effort. COQ exposes the hidden costs in any project, especially those involved in finding and fixing defects.

Learn how to use this robust metric, expressed in money, to demonstrate the value to the organization of any effort whether developing a system or implementing a productivity/quality strategy.

Use COQ to drive down the Cost of Failure and demonstrate ROI and cost avoidance and reduction.

How does a large, globally-distributed organization harness ideas and insights from within and without? Well, in the case of the Ministry of Defence (MOD), this question was answered with pinpoint precision.

Faced with continual cost pressure, the MOD actively launched a process analysis exercise to look at cost management within the organization.

The aim of the project was to gather insights both from within the Ministry of Defense and from specific industries outside the organization, including health, education and finance.

The project was successful – over 180,000 ideas were submitted overall. The next challenge was how to process more information than a small team of people could handle manually.

Join Stuart Laws (LinkedIn profile) from the MOD and Dennis Parker (LinkedIn profile) from K2 as they highlight the key milestones in the journey, from conception to completion, including:

  1. Launching the operation – identifying key stakeholders and getting the project off the ground
  2. Receiving external feedback – the reasons for requesting insight from outside organizations
  3. Evaluating cloud options – why cloud-based solutions were considered
  4. Managing the project – the steps taken to ensure the project was launched with speed and agility, while remaining cost effective
  5. Viewing the solution – a demonstration of the solution in action

Neil Ward-Dutton (LinkedIn profile, MWD bio) analyst at MWD advisors, will also provide his perspective on the challenges that the MoD overcame in this project and the significance of the outcomes it achieved.

It’s a Success! Says Who?
The Marriage between Product Development & Project Management

  • When and how do you REALLY know a project is a success?
  • What is needed to improve success?
  • How can project managers better influence the success of projects?

In this talk, Tom Carbone will challenge our ideas about project success concepts.

Tom will examine the dimensions of success measurement and reported success factors. He will provide ideas about planning for success through what he terms “the marriage of project management and product management.”

Attendees will be provided with Tom’s Success Measure Discussion Board, a communication tool to visualize success dimensions for projects. Attendees will gain a broader perspective on success dimensions along with techniques they can use with sponsors and their team members to discuss success planning.

Presenter: Thomas Carbone (PhD, PMP, SSBB) has over 20 years of international project management experience including a global PMO deployment and speaks to audiences  on topics in project management, execution, risk management, operational excellence, new product development, lean, and Six Sigma.  His informative, interactive, and engaging presentations at numerous global conferences and society chapter meetings have been highly praised and regarded.
