What Makes Happiness At Work So Hard?

The truth is that happy cultures are difficult to build and sustain.

  • First, organizations must change the powerful social scripts that inadvertently undermine positive environments and behaviors.
  • Second, business priorities must demonstrate a real commitment to happiness as a strategy for success.

In this Second of a three part webinar series on The Happiness Advantage at Work, Devin Hughes,  talks to Jennifer Falkenberg, Director of Customer Service Learning & Development, on the challenges and critical steps involved in building a happiness advantage inside T-Mobile.

To learn more about the 1st recorded session see our post  The Happiness Advantage At Work Part 1: Unraveling the Happiness Mystery and link to the recording.

In the fast-moving mobile marketplace, T-Mobile is a positive outlier.  Jennifer suggested that happiness might be exactly what her organization needed as an enabler to deliver on T-Mobile’s Un-carrier promise to employees and customers.

Jennifer saw that starting inside out and infusing happiness into their DNA was “how” T-Mobile could deliver on the Company’s mission to revolutionize the wireless industry.

Hear Jennifer’s story and join in the dialogue to discuss:

  • How “social scripts”, the unwritten rules that dictate how we behave when others are present, determine the rules of engagement inside our organizations and ultimately define corporate culture
  • How to leverage and manage social scripts to create a more positive workplace that fosters higher performance and aligns with (and drives) company objectives.
  • The priority check needed by management at all levels when focusing on the long-term success of our organizations.  This includes both recognition that a positive culture drives better performance – but how important it is that that connection is made clear!
  • The power of leading from the front in building awareness and momentum, and how success can ripple out in group environments, especially the workplace.

As a participant you will gain valuable insights into:

  1. How to get senior leader buy-in and support for happiness
  2. How to empower teams and individuals to create a high-performing culture
  3. How to spread learning and positive behaviors that support both happiness and performance
  4. Why JJ and Nationwide Brokerage Solutions is committed strategically to a world class, happy and engaged culture

Agile is a way of working that is based on core value and principles.  From those core values and principles, practices are developed.

Most people know Agile from specific practices like daily stand up, story points, user stories, etc, but the foundation of Agile is its fundamental values and principles.

Because of this Agile is very extendable, meaning new flavors of Agile can be developed as well as new practices.

One of those new flavors of Agile is the Lean Start-up. Lean Start-Up or LSU, is a flavor of agile dealing with Product Development and Launch.

It can tie in marketing / sales, but at its core, it is a way of enabling your organization to test early and often and from there use what you learned to successful scale new products with much less long term risk.

Even though “Start-up” is in the name of this flavor of Agile, it isn’t just for small organizations or entrepreneur based organizations.

One of the big trends for large enterprise organizations is the concept of Intre-preneurship. Which is basically incubating new products using entrepreneur tactics while working in a larger organization.

The same can be done with Lean Start-up.

In this presentation we will look at what Lean Start-Up is and techniques used to successfully take advantage of its practices and activities.

From that point, we will look at some practical real-world examples of how Lean Start-up can be executed within any organization type.

With real-world examples, this seminar will explain the theory of Lean Start-up, how it can be executed to significantly reduce the risks involved in new product development, and how it allows the market to help you make decisions over trying to plan where you think the market will end up.

Presenter: David Mantica (LinkedIn profile) – David Mantica has product managed the initiation, development and delivery of more than 300 instructor-led and live, online training courses, in software development life cycle, IT, telecommunications, finance, healthcare IT, and marketing industries.
