Open-source software DBMS (OSDBMS) software has come a long way in the past 10 years, creating new options for organizations to not only save costs but also experiment with many new technologies.
Products range from traditional relational to new, nonrelational DBMS technologies, such as graph, document, key-value and increasingly, multimodel.
Although cost optimization is a valid use of OSDBMS, there are other advantages to implementing these technologies as well.
Replacing older technologies, such as prerelational, pure-XML, object-oriented DBMSs and consolidating outdated desktop DBMS products are a few of the options. OSDBMS products are not without risk.
It is important to understand the risks and rewards associated with OSDBMS — when to use them and when not to, when to purchase support and how to mitigate the risks.
Discussion Topics:
- If OSDBMS is ready for “prime-time”
- What OSDBMS choices are available
- Best practices for implementing OSDBMS
