Careers used to be predictable. There were ladders. Each rung led up the hierarchy. Then individual aspirations and company needs began to evolve. Old ladders became largely inaccessible.

Some rungs disappeared, and the space between others shifted from steps to leaps. Today’s marketplace demands an agile workforce.

Organizational structures have become fluid and flexible. As a result, career mobility has emerged as essential for individuals at all levels.

No longer is mobility just about physical movement or assuming the greater responsibilities that come with a promotion.

Career mobility today is about flexibility and agility. It is a rich mix of experiences, roles, assignments, and options. Savvy careerists have come to appreciate the ability and willingness to explore multiple opportunities and experiences.

To succeed in a rapidly changing environment employees need to recognize when new opportunities for growth emerge and to be ready with options when others fade or change.

Like the navigation systems we rely on to reroute our travels based on unexpected traffic congestion, shortcut options and last-minute detours, a career mobility mindset will provide a foundation for resilience in a changing world of work.

This session will open a new lens for managers and employees who want to make the most of the new career landscape.

Objectives:

  • Explore the business case for the new lens on career mobility.
  • Understand the opportunities available in organizations other than the traditional vertical move.
  • Practice four ways to do an “Enrichment Workout!”

Dr. Beverly Kaye (LinkedIn profile) is an international besting author and a recognized authority on career issues and on retention and engagement in the workplace. Her first book, Up Is Not The Only Way: A Guide to Developing Workforce Talent, foresaw the effects that leaner, flatter organizations would have on individual careers and the subsequent need for workers to take charge of their own careers. She also developed learning solutions and systems for managers and employees to work together to help employees achieve their developmental goals. With the fourth edition of a bestseller she coauthored, Love ’em or Lose ’em: Getting Good People to Stay (4th edition), and Help Them Grow or Watch Them Go: Career Conversations Employees Want Bev addressses one of the most pressing workplace problems of the 21st century: retaining and engaging employees. In her follow-up companion best seller, Love It, Don’t Leave It: 26 Ways to Get What You Want at Work, she shows employees how they can find greater satisfaction in their current work lives.

Part 3: Decisions NextGen Business
Competencies For PMs & BAs

Fast moving agile businesses need engaged teams that drive out faster testable insights for extremely reduced time from concept to cash.

NextGen Project Managers and Business Analysts meet this challenge with their own NextGen business competencies – to build shared understanding of trends, customer/market forces and organizational imperatives to drive fast value decision making.

They exert new forms of leadership to help teams of all kinds (IT and beyond) to seed their backlogs with innovative pre-flight tested, market ready ideas.

This series will be a four part deep dive into a competency wheel for new project leaders called the Discovery Leadership framework.

Developed by Kupe Kupersmith CBAP®, (LinkedIn @Kupe)President B2T Training, and Curtis Michelson (LinkedIn profile) with guidance from a global community, the framework is a holistic set of competencies grouped into four chunks.

In his book, To Sell is Human, Daniel Pink makes the case that we are all in sales. We are all trying to move and influence others. So, it is no surprise that Engaging others around us is a NextGen business competency.

In this final part of the four-part series, we will explore how to creatively engage others to generate buy-in for ideas and decisions. You’ll see the power of leveling up your emotional IQ, use of storytelling, ability to harness conflict, focus on being co-creative, and a knack for making all of this work fun.

Action Learning is a dynamic process that helps participants learn individually, as a team and as an organization.

Ultimately, this process helps organizations develop creative, flexible and successful projects that can serve as best practices and increase shareholder value.

In this webinar, participants will see:

  • Examples of measuring the return on investment in executive education, looking at the incremental economic benefit generated from program projects.
  • An effective Action Learning process applied to real world individual or team projects increases the probability of meeting and/or exceeding the commitments senior leadership is expecting.
  • How the application of action learning can foster invaluable insight and perspective to individuals and teams – getting them to think about aspects of their projects they have not considered, possibly because they have been too close to them.

Presenter: Thomas E. Conine, Jr., Ph.D. (LinkedIn profile) is President of TRI Corporation, which specializes in corporate education, experiential leadership and simulation programs. Dr. Conine is also a professor of finance at Fairfield University.
