This presentation is on the NEW textbook ‘Forecast Scheduling with Microsoft Project Online2018’ by Eric Uyttewaal.

Eric invented the ‘Principle of Dynamic Scheduling’ stating: If one thing changes in your project, you should have to change only a single cell in your project schedule.

The scheduling engine will then recalculate the rest of the schedule and forecast finish and total cost. Using this principle, you can minimize your effort when updating schedules, which is hard during the busy execution phase.

This principle led to a second ‘Principle of Forecast Scheduling’ that states: If you set up your project schedule as a valid, dynamic, robust model of the project, it will continuously forecast your project. With these two principles in mind,

Eric reviewed all features in Project Online and revised his 86 best-practices for real-world projects.

By following these, you will take your project scheduling to the next level. You could use the corresponding add-in, called Forecast Scheduling App, to guide you through this process.

You can now even become certified as a Forecast Scheduler on three levels of modeling: Time, Workloads and Costs. These levels build on one another in the order listed. PMOs will have a framework, a textbook, a checklist and an add-in to analyze all schedules in their portfolio and provide detailed feedback to schedule owners.

Why are YOU not forecasting your projects?

Key learning points:

  • What is your aim: Model the Time, Workload and/or Cost dimension of your project?
  • The principle of Dynamic Scheduling and Forecast scheduling demonstrated in real-life projects
  • What benefits to expect from Dynamic Scheduling and Forecast scheduling?

Eric will give demonstrations in Microsoft Project Online. There will be a special discount on the textbook and on add-ins for those who attend the live webinar.

Presenter: Eric Uyttewaal (LinkedIn profile) is Canadian and the author of the bestseller Forecast Scheduling with Microsoft Project 2013  He founded ProjectPro that specializes in Microsoft Project and Project Server. Eric has been involved in large programs at the Canadian Forces, IBM Cognos, Northrop Grumman, SanDisk and Investors Group. He was President of the PMI Ottawa Chapter in 1997. Learn How To Manage Knowledge In Projects

Knowledge management is the systematic management of information and learning.

It turns personal information and experience into collective knowledge that can be widely shared throughout an organisation and a profession.

Find out what industry leaders are saying:

  • Eddie Obeng – Learning Director, Pentacle the Virtual Business School
    • If there was one thing to do, I would say continue to learn, continue to share and keep changing what you do in the knowledge that whatever you did yesterday is probably slowly becoming out of date for tomorrow.
  • Andrew Holmes – Head of Enterprise Program Management Office, Silicon Valley Bank
    • I think it’s really important that project managers and programme managers continue to learn and share their knowledge on an ongoing basis
    • I think you need to understand is that the experience of running different types of projects in different cultures and different industries and different organisations is absolutely essential to building that knowledge
    • Equally continue to grow your understanding by reading beyond the subject, taking broader interest in things around you and weaving that in to project and programme management.

Terminology sections or documents are critical resources for implementing a standard. However, users tend to take them for granted as just being part of the standard.

But did you know:

  • In what situation a word or phrase is selected to be defined as a term in the terminology document or section?
  • What science is behind the definition of a term?
  • How to find definitions of a term in various standards for free?
  • How to relate the meaning of a term to the meaning in common dictionaries?
  • The word or phrase will be not be adopted as a term if the intended meaning of the word or phrase is found in a dictionary?
  • If not, you are not alone. New terms are not adopted easily in standards. It’s a profound process – dull to some – yet largely unknown to people.

Panelists will shed light on the process & provide background info on:

  • The ISO and Technical Committee structure
  • Why some consider terminology work dull, yet profound
  • The science behind a term
  • Terminology principles
  • Concept systems
  • The difference between a glossary and a terminology document

Panelists:

  1. Gary Jing (LinkedIn profile),
  2. Kimberly Johnson (LinkedIn profile),
  3.  Brian Cohn (LinkedIn profile) ,
  4. Gina Lund

A reactive Project Manager tries to resolve issues when they occur. A proactive Project Manager tries to resolve potential problems before they occur.

Many problems can be seen ahead of time. Risk management is a proactive process to eliminate these potential problems before they occur, and therefore increase the likelihood of success on the project.

Many project managers do not proactively manage risks. It is a shame. It is really not a hard process. You can be effective in four easy steps.

Online Webinar  – Recorded October 24th 2017
Activity Type: Education – Online or Digital Media  1 PDU – Free
Provider: Association for Project Management – APM

Enjoy this session provided by APM Systems Thinking Specific Interest Group (SIG) presented by Dr Michael Emes, SIG CoChair and David Cole, SIG committee member.

This webinar describes systems thinking concepts and methods, why it is important and how it can be beneficially applied to portfolio, programme & project management.

Traditional top-down ‘divide-and-conquer’ approaches are often unsuccessful for dynamically complex problems containing non-linear component, inter-dependencies or for complex projects, where there is a diversity of views amongst stakeholders as to what the objectives should be because:

  • It is not clear where the ‘Top’ is.
  • It is not clear how the problem should be ‘divided’.

Systems thinking is a discipline for seeing wholes and enables these types of problems to be addressed to identify where the key leverage points are. Systems thinking does not necessarily replace traditional top-down thinking, but can complement it by simplifying complex problems and making them easier to understand.

The webinar will describe what systems thinking is, why it is important and how it can be applied to portfolio, programme and project management to:

  • Support identification and definition of the right portfolio, programme and/or project.
  • Support implementing the portfolio, programme and/or project right.
Maximise Outcomes/ Outputs and minimise unintended consequences.
