Scrum Master and Project Manager are two roles that, for the past 15 years, coexisted well, especially in IT projects.

From the very technical role that was part of the software development team, the Scrum Master evolved into a new organizational role, sometimes with a well defined job description and with responsibilities that transcended the technical background from which it originated.

Although the role was defined in the Scrum framework, the Scrum Master role is now present in other frameworks and there are many training courses and certifications available from other organizations with different views on the skills required and the responsibilities of the Scrum Master.

It is additional evidence that the role is evolving beyond what the Scrum Guide authors intended.

The Project Manager role also changed since the Agile Manifesto publication and the adoption of Agile delivery frameworks. Mainly due to a dynamic business environment, more geographically distributed workforce, and last but not least because of the digital revolution: cloud, social media and mobile technology’s impact on how projects are managed and delivered.

Skills developed as a Scrum Master, like team and people management, are a good foundation for career development.

Like in any other profession Scrum Masters will reach a point where they feel the need to go beyond a Scrum Team of 5-9. Project Management is one option for career change but is it the right one?

This presentation with  Stelian Roman (LinkedIn profile); is based on his experience as a Development Team Lead, Development Manager, Scrum Master and Project Manager working with Scrum teams.

It contains also advice for Project Managers and Scrum Masters that want to play a dual role.

Online Webinar  – Recorded November 8th, 2017
Activity Type: Education – Online or Digital Media  1 PDU – Free
Provider:  The Corporate Education Group ( REP 1011 )

Agile project management is a game changer, especially for IT project managers.

That is because, typically, when agile is embraced by an organization, the role of project manager is de-emphasized in favor of self-organizing teams, and large strategic projects are decomposed in favor of shorter more frequent releases.

The business Project Management Office typically handles the strategic efforts, and the IT organization pivots to improving infrastructure and processes for managing code releases into environments.

So, what do these shifts mean for the IT project manager and their career path?

Using research and practical experience, this webinar introduces the agile concepts that most affect IT project managers and their options moving forward.

Main learning points include:

  • Agile concepts in relation to project management processes
  • The shift from IT project manager to scrum master or product owner or subject matter expert.
  • Relationship between scrum master and product owner
  • New skills to succeed in the agile universe with an emphasis on:
    • Facilitator: Coaching and team development
    • Change manager: Emphasis on flexibility
    • Innovation cheerleader
    • Business story writer and backlog management

Presenter: Bonnie Cooper (LinkedIn profile), PMP®, Instructo for Corporate Education Group, is a twenty-year information technology professional. In her current role as the Program Director for the Massachusetts Medical Society’s (MMS) Corporate IT Program Office, Bonnie is responsible for coordinating the efforts of project teams, overseeing the implementation of project standards, managing the corporate IT strategic plan, and leading the program to re-engineer the membership platform for MMS.

This is the third and final webinar in the Afterburner Flawless Execution series.

Although it is not a prerequisite to participate in this session, be sure to view the first webinars in this series,

  1. The Flawless Execution Advantage for Project Managers and
  2.  How to Identify Your Plan is at Risk: Managing Project Risk with Flawless Execution.

What do you do once your project comes to an end?

When projects end in success, we often high-five and move on to the next project or task.

This may be successful in the short run, but long-term, it is critical to pause after every one of your projects for a Debrief.

In Flawless Execution, the Debrief is where the root causes of success and failure are identified.

Joel Neeb (LinkedIn profile) will teach you how to conduct a structured Debrief to assure your team can scale successes and eliminate the failures that may have occurred during the project.
