Pivot with Passion: Darkness to Light

Leaders, it is our responsibility to walk bravely with darkness and light. Now that we are mechanically doing the same old workshops, conferences and meetings with mostly online delivery, the darkness is beginning to close around us. Here’s an interesting fact about going from light to darkness:

“… it’s the ability to adapt to darkness and the time it takes for one’s vision to recover when going from light to darkness that is most affected. Photoreceptor cells that handle our night vision die and degenerate sooner than the cells that manage our daytime vision.”

We didn’t even know we were going to be in darkness when Covid sent us home, and we are still agitated. Looking back to ‘before Covid’, most of us in L&D were doing the same things the same old ways. L&D meant teaching the same types of workshops with the same formats. Training was a commodity project (begin/end), not a process (continue).

Did learning occur? Maybe a little, but in general we played it pretty safe. The most exciting new (?) thing was Zoom.

When Covid showed up, everything went virtual. The same modules previously used face to face, morphed into online modules with producers.

Being with others physically was really scary so online was the worst best choice. The absence of real people was difficult for L&D people who like to be in person, including me.

We know how to live in this world now and we’ve slowly but surely evolved into a common, silent community of fear. Innovation in teaching, designing, leading and inventing is dialed in – everything is too risky, even L&D. We have become uncomfortably used to our new existence including masks, empty stores, and loneliness.

What if we looked at a Middlespace in L&D?

It’s time for us all to step up for innovative ways to move past doing the same pre-covid and current in-covid ways of learning. Join the TMN Webinar to look forward.

  1. What are new ways we can drive hope, innovation and learning?
  2. are the steps to minimize the power of fear?
  3. Like prisoners in the dark, how will we learn to see when we enter the light?

DESPITE PANDEMIC CHALLENGES, L&D PROFESSIONALS ARE MANAGING TO CREATE A NEW TRAJECTORY BASED UPON HELPING PEOPLE INSTITUTE POSITIVE HABITS AND LEAN INTO SOCIAL CONNECTION.

Two decades of research by Training 2022 keynote speaker Shawn Achor (LinkedIn profile) Founder, GoodThinkInc, and others, show that the greatest competitive advantage in the modern economy is a positive and engaged brain—especially during crisis and suffering.

In this webinar Devin will explore the key insights from new research into the four primary ways in which leaders and cultures are able to break negative social scripts and find a way to lead positive change and embrace the new world of work well-being. Discover what leading with optimism really looks like in times of significant challenge.

Research examples featured in Harvard Business Review as well as from companies including USAA, Farmers Insurance, Genesis Health Systems, North Country Family Health Center and others will be featured.

  • Cultivating positive moments (small, intentional acts that can create lasting positive emotions)

One-way facilitation, where virtual trainers ask one question and move on to the next subject, is like the – Hi!, Hello, and Good-bye!” – conversation.

The virtual trainer signals to the learner that the learning is bound to be shallow, most likely lacking depth, expectedly boring, and possibly a total waste of time.

For virtual learners to be engaged, we need to facilitate penetrating and in-depth conversations. We want learners to be glued to your session – all ears, excited, and anticipating the end of the session so they can quickly apply ideas.

In this webinar, Ray will “walk his talk”. He will demonstrate and allow you to experience “super facilitation” in virtual training. He will also share this exciting article on “21 Sure-Fire Facilitation Techniques in Virtual Training.”

Topics to cover:

  • What are the top 3 stumbling blocks of virtual trainers in facilitation?
  • Why are one-question, single-answer questions duds and show a lack of sincerity, depth, and persuasion?
  • How do you structure lesson scripts that lead and ease into flawless conversations?
  • What are the building blocks of Ray’s “Cascading Facilitation Technique?”
  • How do you leverage participants to be your co-facilitators to engage others to learn more?
  • How do you utilize role-playing, discussion, discovery, debate, and conflict-resolution as facilitation techniques?
  • How do you facilitate in break-outs and small groups?
  • What virtual training technology is appropriate?

Before the pandemic, companies spent large amounts of effort on creating a vibrant, productive, and fun company culture.

was used as a barometer for hiring people that were a “culture-fit”, as a tool for recruiters to lure talent with the glam of in-office amenities, for keeping employee satisfaction high, and to foster better communication and collaboration between teammates.

With teams now being scattered across the globe, and many teams permanently implementing a remote workplace, it’s a challenge for HR and L&D teams to find new ways of fostering culture virtually.

Presenter:  Jill Christensen, (LinkedIn profile) President, Jill Christensen International & author of the best-selling book, If Not You, Who? Cracking the Code of Employee Disengagement, has uncovered a four-step strategy to turn your disengaged workforce into a unified high-performing team, resulting in increased profits, customer satisfaction, productivity, and retention.
