Bad projects abound, and research by Project Management Institute and others has provided useful insight into the underlying causes of bad projects.

In this webinar Michael looks beyond why projects go bad and explores why bad projects are so hard to kill.

Michael explains how sunk costs, groupthink, escalation of commitment, and conflicts of interest contribute to keeping death-march projects needlessly alive.

Each of these behaviors is defined and illustrated using project stories from history (the sinking of the Titanic and the Concorde jetliner), project stories from the presenter’s own personal experience climbing some of the world’s tallest mountains (Denali, Aconcagua, and Kilimanjaro), and project stories from business (Abilene Paradox and industry-funded soda studies).

Some recently published research about the neural science underlying these behaviors is referenced and the impact of these behaviors is described and then linked to the undercutting of ethics, trust, leadership, and project success.

Walk away with a list of actions that you can take to help avoid being victimized by bad projects.

Presenter: Michael O’Brochta (LinkedIn profile) ACP, PMP  MPM has managed hundreds of projects as Zozer Inc. President, he helps organizations raise their level of project management performance. As senior project manager at the Central Intelligence Agency, he led the project management and systems engineering training and certification program to mature practices agency-wide.  Since Michael’s recent climb of another of the world’s seven summits, he has been exploring the relationship between project management and mountain climbing

Identification & Counterbalancing Of Bounds
(Rationale to Wisdom)

It is very important for the project managers to make an optimal decision rather than a satisfying decision.

If project managers consider the bounds highlighted and make proper adjustments to the current decision-making process, it would help them in striving towards making the optimal decision for the project.

Project managers across different disciplines and industries can make use of the proposed decision making model for effective decision making and counterbalancing bounded rationality.

This decision-making model, which is based on Rational Thought Process, Analytical & Intuitive Approach, Project Management Triple Constraints, Metacognition, has been proposed.

If adopted, it reduces the bound quotient to a great extent. If organizations succeed in implementing this model their executives will able to make optimal decisions rather than just satisfying decisions.

Professionals working in the field of project management are often exposed to stressful situations and frustrations caused by a wide variety of challenges ranging from unrealistic expectations, stakeholder resistance, or constantly changing priorities.

The reactions to these challenges depends greatly on the individual, their experience, and capabilities.

One thing that is certain is professionals could employ different techniques in dealing with organizational or team stressors, some positive, and others negative.

Unfortunately, even the most seasoned professionals are sometimes susceptible to committing a major mistake or taking an action that could ultimately be detrimental to the organization.

Given that all projects are about relationships, one of the most common causes of mistakes is due to misalignment of relationships.

As project, program, and portfolio managers react to these misalignments either fix them or to deal with frustration, there is a major risk that the action could ultimately result in burning bridges in terms of relationships with stakeholders, sponsors, customers, or organization. Burning bridges results in irreparable damage to relationships and often in hind sight may not be necessary.

In this webinar  Philip Diab (LinkedIn profile) explores the concept of burning bridges through a series of scenarios based on fictionalized accounts and stories.

The session will draw upon lessons learned from real life situations to share tips on how professionals can guard against unnecessary mistakes leading to burned bridges.

Philip will also discuss potential techniques and actions to be used in avoiding some common mistakes.

Do you find yourself thinking that this benefits management stuff just seems really complicated and you’re not sure what to do?

With organisations becoming increasingly focused on ensuring benefits from change are realised, it is vital to have a mechanism for managing them pro-actively.

In this webinar, Jagjivan Matharu (LinkedIn profile) will focus on the practical and pragmatic application of a streamlined benefits management process that you can use for your change initiative (project, programme or whatever you call it).

Jagjivan will work through the core 4 step process for all benefits:

  1. Identify them;
  2. Define them;
  3. Plan for their realisation;
  4. Realise them.

In each step of the process, those aspects which have proven to work (not on the theory) will be identified, with lots of hints, tips and obstacles to avoid.

Did you know that NASA lost a mission sent to Mars, because of one confusion with the metric system? Because of a simple mistake, US$125 million were sent to the space. Literally.

How was this failure possible? Murphy’s law?

In the Fortune 500 companies, 70% of the projects fail in some way.

These are projects where everything is done correctly, which have qualified professionals, matured processes and the most exotic tools. These projects are expected to succeed. So, why do they fail? It may look like Murphy’s law!

In this culturally rich webinar,  Luis Alberto Caceres Villota (LinkedIn profile) author of Murphy On Projects: Causas de falhas nos projetos e como preveni-las (Portuguese Edition) explores proposes a new approach to analyze failure in projects: exploring common behavioral issues that leads to failure in management.

Covering from attitudes up to mental processes which interfere in the decision making. These factors combined create 101 common situations which lead to failure: overambitious goals, superficial planning, abstinence during execution, insistence in ignoring the problems and many others.

The author introduces the “Five deadly sins of the project manager”, mentions some of the 25 classical mistakes and interesting laws and principles of the project management which are useful to prevent these situations.

Historical and well known cases will help to illustrate the concepts: from the Roman Empire, Napoleon, and the Titanic, until recent cases in NASA and US Army projects.

At the end of this webinar, the attendee you will have a clear picture of how behaviors affects the project results, and will visualize the necessary skills to address them.
