Managers Should Lead Not Follow …

Or Else Just Get Out Of the Way

HCI’s latest Talent Pulse research, Identifying and Developing First-time People Leaders, confirms that 82% of first-time leaders come from within the organization. But what follows is often a trial by fire, or more apropos, trial and error, as the support for their new role is relegated to on-the-job training.

These employees were good tacticians as evidenced by their promotion, but what they aren’t getting is support or development in the areas they, and the organization, need most: leadership development.

HCI’s research also found that the average age of a supervisor is 33 years old, but most managers don’t participate in leadership training until they are 42.

This alarming disconnect further demonstrates that the development of leadership capabilities in the very people who hold the key to engagement in our companies is sorely lacking.

Perhaps this is because the nuances of “managers” versus “leaders” are not well understood in many organizations.

Join noted thought leader, Josh Allan Dykstra (LinkedIn profile) who wrote in a recent article that when we ask people to “manage” – as he explains we’re in effect asking them to block the path of progress and stand in the way of innovation.

What we really must do is create leaders out of everyone in the organization and enable individuals at all levels to bring their highest contribution, best ideas, and full engagement to work all day, every day.

Explore concepts such as:

  • How to bring out the best in your employees with a fresh take on strengths-based development
  • Capitalizing on opportunities presented in a constantly-changing economy
  • Shifting the culture of your organization to become more agile and effective

We often try to bypass the uncertainties we encounter in our work as managers.

However, in this presentation I would suggest to you that by using simple principles from complexity thinking you might be managing uncertain contexts and decisions much better.

In the presentation Eitan Reich (LinkedIn profile) will describe how exactly complex, dynamic situations are different from simple and even complicated ones.

Also learn about key principles of complexity thinking that would be useful in your change projects and for your decision making, planning and managing processes.

As project management professionals, we have all become increasingly aware of the importance of the so-called “soft skills” aspect of our profession.

In recent years, skills such as time management, communication (verbal and non-verbal), emotional intelligence (EQ), facilitation, conflict resolution, and organizational management have received more and more recognition as essential aspects of successful project management.

Another essential skill we as PM professionals need to recognize is Project Relationship Management or PRM. Project Relationship Management (PRM) is defined as the active development, cultivation, and maintenance of  project-associated relationships.

in this presentation Ruffin Veal III  takes a look at each of the essential relationships encountered during the life cycle of a project and the effective development, cultivation and maintenance of each.

Presenter: Ruffin Veal III PMP (LinkedIn profilePrincipal Ruffin Veal and Associates, Inc, is an IT & PM professional whose career spans multiple industries including manufacturing, banking, retail and government. An author, speaker and trainer whose industry related articles can be seen in the Project Management Institute’s (PMI) Virtual Library as well as in national and international publications. Ruffin holds a B.S. degree in Computer Science and an M.S. degree in Project Management. Make sure to check out Ruffin’s ProjectTalk blog.

In technology projects, the project manager has to manage a variety of team members.

The software developer is often a critical team player. Unfortunately, there is often a communication and style disconnect between the PM and the developer. If this dysfunctional relationship continues, the project will fail.

In this webinar, attendees will lead practical strategies to work productively with developers.

Topics to be covered: a day in the life of your developer, how to network and demonstrate respect and how to proactively manage developers.

With increased technical knowledge and leadership dedication, the PM-Developer collaboration can become a win-win!

Presenter: Bruce Harpham (LinkedIn profile) runs Project Management Hacks, and his experience has focused on the financial services industry. Bruce’s writing on project management has appeared in Project Manager Today magazine, Project TimesCIO.com, and  ProjectManagement.com. In 2014, he won several blogging awards from IT World Canada for his writing on technology trends.
