The goal of our project execution engine is to deliver value to the organization. But we often don’t manage them that way.

We have learned in our factories to balance the capacity of the various steps in our processes and to limit the flow of jobs into the system. We see the inventory build-up and risk becoming obsolete before it can be consumed.

Why, then, do we treat our projects differently?

In this session Brian Cohn (LinkedIn profile),  & Mark Adler Madsen (LinkedIn profile) will talk about ways to meter the input to the project execution system to maximize the value of our output and dramatically reduce value lost to work that goes stale.

The core of the system is having a list of prioritized projects ready to execute and pulling when there is capacity to start another one. In an ideal world this will mean that we never need to trade priorities of the running projects – we’ve only put as many into the system as we can execute efficiently in parallel.

But the world isn’t ideal and there will still be conflicts between the running projects – though many fewer than before. When conflicts occur, we often prioritize ineffectually.

In this session they will talk about principles that can lead us to wiser decisions when choosing when and whether to give a project with a problem a boost.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify how constraints and bottlenecks limit value delivery
  • Explain how prioritizing projects and starting projects only when there is available capacity enhances value delivery
  • Describe how to choose which running projects to accelerate when there are conflicts

Project professionals agree – a team that is primed to question status quo and embrace innovation provides the most fertile ground for successful projects.

Without this cultural framework, new ideas are neither given the opportunity to blossom nor discussed candidly when shared.

On the other hand, teams that explore “Why not?” are more open to change and tend to see more success in many phases of project work.

From initial spawning of ideas all the way through project closure, developing this culture can yield fertile soil that is ready to germinate new ideas from customers, employees, and business leaders.

In this webinar, Susan Beauchamp (LinkedIn profile) and Jyothis Gopi (LinkedIn profile) unfold ways that industries can cultivate such a culture in their teams.

Lessons learned from specific examples of teams undergoing transformation will be explored to identify common best practices.  Actual case studies used are from different industries: Manufacturing and Telecom and in different functions: Operations and Sales.

Disciplined Agile (DA) is a hybrid of existing methods that provides the flexibility to use a tailored approach that matches your context. In a nutshell, Disciplined Agile is “pragmatic agile”.

In this webinar Klaus Boedker (LinkedIn profile) explores how a small software development team in an established enterprise applies Disciplined Agile strategies over time to successfully improve their agility to provide real value to their stakeholders by moving from Scrum to Disciplined DevOps.

This talk presents an overview of what could be next for PMPs wanting to make the jump to Agile.

The world is moving from pre-planned projects to ongoing, incremental releases of parts of an product or service. While projects are still important, this shift is resulting in a need for additional skills. This, of course, does not mean the skills PMPs have are not essential.

In fact, the push to Agile has dropped many skills and attitudes PMPs have that are essential for sustainable success. Hence, while Agile may at first look like a need for an acquisition of totally new skills, PMPs already possess much of what’s missing and needed in the Agile space.

In this talk Al Shalloway (@AlShalloway) (LinkedIn profile) will start with a discussion of the two most popular frameworks in Agile today – Scrum and SAFe.

These are focused on teams and entire organizations respectively.

However, each misses something very important. After seeing the good Scrum and SAFe provide and summarizing what’s missing, the talk with discuss what Disciplined Agile can offer in general and what the DA Sr Scrum Master and Value Stream Consultant offers in particular.

Many in the Agile space have not appreciated the value of solid project management and the discipline required for repeatedly producing effective results.

This foundation is often harder to attain than many Agile concepts. PMPs have an opportunity to go into the Agile mindset by embracing what they know that is useful in Agile while discarding some older ideas that are not productive.

The Disciplined Agile Curriculum, particularly the DA Sr ScrumMaster and DA Value Stream Consultant workshops, can leapfrog iyou into the front of the pack, not merely be in a role of catching up.
