Bad projects abound, and research by Project Management Institute and others has provided useful insight into the underlying causes of bad projects.

In this webinar Michael looks beyond why projects go bad and explores why bad projects are so hard to kill.

Michael explains how sunk costs, groupthink, escalation of commitment, and conflicts of interest contribute to keeping death-march projects needlessly alive.

Each of these behaviors is defined and illustrated using project stories from history (the sinking of the Titanic and the Concorde jetliner), project stories from the presenter’s own personal experience climbing some of the world’s tallest mountains (Denali, Aconcagua, and Kilimanjaro), and project stories from business (Abilene Paradox and industry-funded soda studies).

Some recently published research about the neural science underlying these behaviors is referenced and the impact of these behaviors is described and then linked to the undercutting of ethics, trust, leadership, and project success.

Walk away with a list of actions that you can take to help avoid being victimized by bad projects.

Presenter: Michael O’Brochta (LinkedIn profile) ACP, PMP  MPM is the author of How To Get Executives To Act For Project Success: Building A Strong Mutual Partnership and has managed hundreds of projects as President of Zozer Inc where Michael helps organizations raise their level of project management performance. As senior project manager at the Central Intelligence Agency, he led the project management and systems engineering training and certification program to mature practices agency-wide.  Since Michael’s recent climb of another of the world’s seven summits, he has been exploring the relationship between project management and mountain climbing

This is the third and final webinar in the Afterburner Flawless Execution series.

Although it is not a prerequisite to participate in this session, be sure to view the first webinars in this series,

  1. The Flawless Execution Advantage for Project Managers and
  2.  How to Identify Your Plan is at Risk: Managing Project Risk with Flawless Execution.

What do you do once your project comes to an end?

When projects end in success, we often high-five and move on to the next project or task.

This may be successful in the short run, but long-term, it is critical to pause after every one of your projects for a Debrief.

In Flawless Execution, the Debrief is where the root causes of success and failure are identified.

Joel Neeb (LinkedIn profile) will teach you how to conduct a structured Debrief to assure your team can scale successes and eliminate the failures that may have occurred during the project.

More and more organisations are currently transitioning into an Agile mindset.

Project Managers are required to be agile themselves in thinking and working in this new way of working with normally limited support or training.

In this webinar, Emily Luijbregts (LinkedIn profile) will  go through what the issues are, how they present themselves and what you can do as a Project Manager to think ‘more agile’ in your projects whilst accepting and learning along the way.

Intercultural Gaps Threaten Many Projects

National cultures, job cultures, enterprise cultures, generational cultures: any gap in those components can lead projects to face culture clashes…and additional problems.

Yet, project managers can not only actively manage those gaps, but also leverage them and thus extend leadership skills.

In this webinar Robert de Quelen (LinkedIn profile) & David Colliquet (LinkedIn profile) will highlight which levers project managers can use to identify and proactively manage intercultural factors within the project, and suggest practical ways to develop an intercultural leadership style which can be effective both at personal and team level.

In the recent years a growing trend of executives and project managers consider that the project success lies more “in the eye of the beholder”, and less in simply meeting the Triple Constraint.

Introduced as “Project Stakeholder Management” in PMBOK® Guide 5th Edition, this knowledge area is acknowledging the importance of stakeholders’ engagement in most projects, most of the time.

Aligned with PMBOK® Guide 6th Edition structure for Stakeholders Knowledge Area, this versatile session combines traditional instruction methods with real-life examples to provide the participants with practical tools and techniques to:

  • Identify, analyze and categorize stakeholders.
  • Discover and map stakeholders’ relationships.
  • Define engagement objectives, plan and execute engagement activities.
  • Monitor efficiency and optimize your actions to achieve desired results.

In this session  George Jucan (LinkedIn profile) covers the entire life-cycle of stakeholders’ engagement, from day 0 to project sign-off, and describes not only WHAT to do but also HOW to do it efficiently – including original tools and techniques proven by George’s successful track record in complex stakeholder environments.
