Duration: 1 hour webinar Credits: 1 PDU Category A – Free PDU
Sponsored by: PMI Requirements Management CoP (REP #S055)
Presented by: Dawn Henwood

Many non-expert readers find the amount of technical detail in a requirements document overwhelming. Faced with a series of long lists and elaborate diagrams, their eyes tend to glaze over. Consequently, they may not examine your document thoroughly enough to be able to provide you with the feedback you need.

The key to creating requirements non-experts can easily read is to think like an web designer and make usability a key factor in your writing. This webinar will introduce you to four simple, easy-to-implement strategies for producing user-friendly requirements:

  • Provide an overview highlighting the business goals and benefits
  • Use summary statements to introduce sections
  • Manage long bulleted lists by using parallelism and subdivisions
  • Integrate use case diagrams and other visuals so they are easy to interpret

As with web design, subtle adjustments can make a big difference to the user experience. Working within your organization’s template for requirements, you can easily apply user-friendly writing strategies to improve your communication with colleagues as well as stakeholders.

Presenter: Dr. Dawn Henwood is a published author of A Writing Guide for IT Professionals, columnist, associate professor and program developer/director. She specializes in helping technical experts bridge the gap in knowledge and values that so often separates them from their customers. Her methods have even the most reluctant writers producing clear documents with ease and confidence.

Live Webinar – September 18th, 2012 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm EDT
Presented by: Enfocus Solutions & Modern Analyst
Duration: 1 hour 1 PDUs Credits: 1 Category C PDU- Free PDU

Webinar attendees will receive a kit of checklists and templates pertaining to business value from the RequirementCoachâ„¢ and Requirements Excellence Frameworkâ„¢ components of the Enfocus Requirement Suite. â„¢

This webinar describes several innovative methods for business analysts to deliver more value to the business and ensure completion of successful enterprise projects. Poor business analysis is the root cause of many project failures.

Many projects fail or do not deliver anticipated benefits because:

  • Teams start on the solution without understanding the problem.
  • Business case was either not defined or was poorly constructed.
  • A clear, complete, and accurate set of requirements is not captured and defined.
  • There is limited focus on business needs.
  • Stakeholder needs were not adequately considered.
  • Requirements were not adequately prioritized.

Well-executed business analysis fully integrated into the project management process helps ensures projects deliver on expected benefits. To receive maximum value, it is necessary to maximize solution value throughout the project lifecycle. A good solution and project definition delivers superior business value; a poor solution and project definition results in lower business value, even if the project has excellent project management.

To resolve these problems, it is necessary to accurately capture business requirements, elicit stakeholder needs, and prepare complete and accurate functional specifications. Requirements management needs to take place throughout the project lifecycle to confirm that business needs are met and business value is delivered.

The webinar will address the following topics:

  • Problem Statement
  • Business Case
  • SMART Business Objectives
  • Business Process Optimization
  • Stakeholder Assessment
  • Solution Assessment and Validation

Presenter John Parker (LinkedIn profile) CEO Enfocus Solutions Inc. discusses the role and potential of business analysts in driving value to the business, aligning IT activities with business goals, and ensuring the successful completion of enterprise projects.
