Third-party risk is an urgent concern for organizations due to their growing reliance on existing and new third parties, increasing complexity of third-party networks, and changing third-party risk profiles.

As executives and Boards ask ever-tougher questions about third parties, Heads of ERM are struggling to drive effective management of third-party risk at the enterprise level.

To succeed, they must develop an approach that can overcome the large and varied nature of their organizations’ third-party networks, and the wide variety of risks that third parties may pose.

In this webinar James Fitzmaurice (LinkedIn profile, Gartner bio) Gartner VP Advisory to learn more on why third-party risk is among the most urgent and difficult challenges facing heads of ERM today.

Discussion Topics:

  • Why third-party risk is among the most urgent and difficult challenges facing heads of ERM today
  • How ERM can provide unique value to the third-party risk management process
  • Where ERM should invest scarce resources to have the largest possible impact on third-party risk exposure

Since the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of project managers and business stakeholders have been wondering what, if anything, could have been done in risk management of their projects better or at least differently to anticipate such an unusual and consequential event.

In many cases, we are finding that the systems and practices we apply in project risk management are incapable to appropriately address events of high impact and extremely low probability, because these risks tend to fall off the margins of our risk frameworks.

We call them ontological uncertainties, extreme unknown unknowns or “black swans” for being unfathomable before being observed and self-evident shortly after. Events like these expand our understanding of what is probable, but give little in a way of quantitative analysis, which leads to confusion among project managers about what can actually be done in advance, with some project managers choosing to do nothing.

It is obvious that to enable a proactive response, risk management at all levels (project, portfolio and enterprise) should apply different approaches in identification, classification and mitigation.

Following in the footsteps of a seminal book The Black Swan by Nicholas Nassim Taleb, Arturas Kuliesas (LinkedIn profile) will demonstrate key failures of traditional risk management and stakeholder management practices in projects where extreme unknown unknowns are concerned.

Special attention would be given to explaining how identification of Black Swans and planning the response for them is different from the traditional techniques we apply with tractable risks (known unknowns).

More importantly, Arturas will address the Project Management Principle of „Embrace Adaptability and Resiliency“ in the 7th edition of Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) as the fundamental, if not perfect, remedy to negative impacts of Black Swans that we need to apply  for the benefit of the project and its stakeholders.

Risk management is a fundamental component of all projects, but to what degree is the full toolkit used, and how is it integrated across an organisation?

In this webinar, Pauline Stewart-Long will review some of the risk practice that could be improved in the Pharma, Biotech and Life Science sector.

Participants will find two threads useful.

  1. Firstly, although we usually collect and assess potential risks, what are the best practices for impact assessment, and what are the most practical methods for establishing practical, meaningful mitigation strategies?
  2. Secondly, although we typically manage risks within a project, these are often mis-aligned at different levels in a company and across a portfolio of projects.

Presenters:

She has led R&D drug development projects as well as major organisational change projects. She left GlaxoSmithKline in 2012 to set up her own consultancy and has developed organisation-specific solutions ensuring the project management organisation acts as a catalyst for R&D strategy by providing staff with the skills to deliver projects. Pauline was the Chair of PIPMG from Dec 2014 until January 2021.

Aligned Assurance

Traditional due diligence methods in risk management policy fail to capture new and evolving risks, especially involving third parties.

More than 80% of legal and compliance leaders say that third-party risks were identified after initial onboarding and due diligence, according to Gartner. This results in slower business processes, increased noncompliance, an incomplete risk picture, and a culture that tries to avoid risk altogether.

Join Gartner experts Alex Ossington (LinkedIn profile) Gartner Principal Advisory & Daniel Hebda (LinkedIn profile) Gartner Director Advisory, Katherine Clinton (LinkedIn profile) Gartner Principal, & Krista Lewis (LinkedIn profile) Sales Manager;  break down the key elements of third-party risk management, highlighting opportunities for assurance alignment and cooperation. Gartner experts will offer third-party risk management case studies, and address the most-pressing questions raised by you and your peers.

Discussion Topics:

  • Apply the key elements of third-party risk management to your Asia-Pacific organisation
  • Discover why aligned assurance plays a core role in third-party risk management
  • Find out how leading organisations approach third-party risk management
