The whole process of project risk management involves people.

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) people are influenced by numerous heuristics (rules of thumb) and biases.

These influences, if not understood, can negatively impact the project risk management process making the outputs less realistic and useful.

The presentation will draw on the work of Dr Ruth Murray-Webster (LinkedIn profile) and Dr David Hillson (known globally as The Risk Doctor) and in particular ‘the Triple Strand’ – which highlights the combined influence of conscious factors, sub-conscious factor (heuristics and biases) and affective factors on the both the perception of risk as well as risk attitude.

While the whole risk management process is influenced by these factors, the first three stages of the process are particularly susceptible – Inhiation, Identification and Assessment. The particular influences on these areas will be discussed.

There is no ‘silver bullet’ that can be used to overcome these influences. However, a better understanding of will help. Those attending will certainly gain from this insight.

Presenter: Peter Simon, (LinkedIn profile) BSc FAPM HonFAPM PMP   has 40+ years experience as a PM consultant & practitioner across all industries and business sectors. Nearly 90% of organizations have adopted or plan to adopt a formal risk appetite framework.  Yet, most still find it challenging to operationalize that framework.

The primary barrier to risk appetite effectiveness, according to enterprise risk management leaders, is the difficulty of articulating guidance on which the business leaders can act.

In this webinar James Fitzmaurice (LinkedIn profile, Gartner bio) Gartner VP Advisory & Chris Matlock, (LinkedIn profile) Gartner Sr Director Advisory; guides enterprise risk management leaders on how to design a practical risk appetite framework that can drive effective actions by the business.

Discussion Topics:

  • Draft a relevant, practical risk appetite framework
  • Create tools to guide appropriate risk-taking behavior at strategic and operational levels
  • Help decision-makers learn and practice risk-appetite principles in a safe environment
