Assurance reviews are essential to the overall good governance of major public projects and programs; in this webinar, Hang Vo, Terry Williams (LinkedIn profile), & Richard Kirkham (LinkedIn profile) explores  some of the challenges around framing and implementing assurance review recommendations during the life-cycle.

PMI funded a research study led by The University of Hull, which seeks to uncover how the treatment of assurance review data influences recommendations and the subsequent actions (or inactions) that arise, using a definitive set of data.

During the webinar,  the presenters discuss some of the implications arising from the findings of this study, explore suggestions for improving current assurance processes in practice and identify recommendations for future research.

Early in 2020 APM analysed results of an online survey of project professionals involved in governance of change.

The results provide a roadmap of actions that we can take to further enhance this crucial role.

APM will share the finding and the recommendations from the sponsor survey including:

• The role of sponsors in the governance of change
• How well sponsors are held to account for successful outcomes of change
• The need for a sponsor competency framework
• Benefits of and approach to sponsor training
• Next steps for sponsorship in the project profession

This webinar is the first of an engagement series throughout July to present the results of the sponsor survey and discuss/debate the implications with project professionals with experience in these areas working in the Financial Services, Postal, Oil and Gas, and Transport sectors.

The APM Governance Specific Interest Group is engaged in improving investment outcomes through better governance of change, and promoting effective sponsorship is crucial in achieving this. They have a number of publications and support material available through the APM for sponsors to help them achieve more successful business outcomes from major change.

Martin Samphire (LinkedIn profile) Owner &Managing Director of 3pmxl Ltd, is the APM Governance Specific Interest Group (SIG) Chair, and has developed guidelines for Governance of Project Management, including ‘Directing Change‘, ‘Governance of Co-Owned Projects‘, ‘Sponsoring Change‘ and ‘Directing Agile Change’. Martin is also a member of a voluntary group, the P3M Data Club looking to improve Business Integrated Governance (BIG).

Katherine Williams (LinkedIn profile) Management Consultant RSM UK, works with organisations across multiple sectors to build and assure project and programme management capability. Katherine’s experience includes delivery of programme assurance (in particular for large scale and high value, co-owned programmes), governance and assurance framework design, strategic and operational risk development, and organisational PPM maturity modelling.

Richard Zavitz (LinkedIn profile) is an experienced project professional working in the sponsorship of major capital investment projects.  He has worked through the full project life cycle and has experience leading teams in the following areas: defining strategy, business case development, securing consents, stakeholder management/communication, writing requirements, design development, delivery oversight, project integration and benefits evaluation.

A good project manager is told that they need to have perfect ratio of technical (or hard) skills and non-technical (or soft) skills.

The soft skills are typically described as communication, leadership, stakeholder management, decision making, conflict resolution etc.  The common element of that all these soft skills is that they are all outward facing.

Stakeholder Engagement helps us understand what people involved with a project want, and how to engage them to help achieve project success. For both new and experienced project managers, a big challenge is where to go for guidance on the topic.

The Stakeholder Engagement Focus Group, part of the APM People SIG , has started to collate stakeholder engagement resources on the APM Website.

This webinar provides an overview of the information and tools currently available and how you can help add to and improve this facility.

There are many reasons why projects may struggle to meet their goals but a lack of effective stakeholder engagement is widely acknowledged to be one of the main issues.

The Stakeholder Engagement Focus Group (SEFG), now part of the APM People SIG, was established to encourage practitioners to make stakeholder engagement a higher priority.

The first project for the SEFG was to start collating stakeholder engagement resources.

The aim is to support project professionals by sharing case studies, creating an introduction to the key principles of stakeholder engagement, and pointing to relevant and useful reference materials.

These APM Stakeholder Resources are now available on the APM website and .accessible to anyone!

In this webinar Fran and Ian will introduce the Stakeholder Engagement Focus Group, provide an update on the SEFG’s progress to date and the materials available on the APM site, and plans for improving and building on these resources.

Presenters:

Fran Bodley-Scott: A veteran marketing & communication consultant with many years experience  and founder of Marketing In Control, Fran specializes in customer retention and stakeholder engagement solutions. She’s been involved with projects throughout her career, ranging from product development to organisation change and business strategy implementation. Fran is an active member of the SEFG. She is a keen supporter of the PMO Flashmob and is also an active member of the APM Stakeholder Engagement Focus Group.

Ian Cribbes (LinkedIn profile) has worked with a wide variety of organisations within the UK and internationally, leading projects with values in excess of £35 million pounds.  Ian is a co-opted member of the People SIG committee and an active member of the Stakeholder Engagement Focus Group.  Ian now runs his own company assisting organisations with programme and project management issues and advising on stakeholder engagement processes.

Another important message from the webinar was a request for case studies. To help the SEFG support other practitioners, project managers are encouraged to provide case studies about their stakeholder engagement experience, tips and recommendations. If you have a case study to share, use the template provided below and send it to: SEFG@apm.org.uk.
