What Is Productive Laziness?

Progress isn’t made by early risers. It’s made by lazy men trying to find easier ways to do something.’ Robert Heinlein (1907 – 1988)

Watch Peter’s Presentation At InfoShare 2014 (below)

By advocating being a ‘lazy’ project manager Peter does not intend that we should all do absolutely nothing.

Peter is not saying we should all sit around drinking coffee, reading a good book and engaging in idle gossip whilst watching the project hours go by and the non-delivered project milestones disappear over the horizon. That would obviously be plain stupid and would result in an extremely short career in project management, in fact probably a very short career full stop!

Lazy Does Not Mean “Stupid”

Peter just means that we should all adopt a more focused approach to project management and to exercise our efforts where it really matters, rather than rushing around like busy, busy bees involving ourselves in unimportant, non-critical activities that others can better address, or indeed that do not need addressing at all in some cases.

Presenter:  Peter Taylor PMP– (LinkedIn profile, @TheLazyPM) is a dynamic and commercially astute professional who has achieved notable success in Project Management.Peter’s background in PM  over the last 30+ years, MRP/ERP systems, Business Intelligence (BI) and PLM. He has spent the last 10 years leading PMOs and developing project managers.

Peter is a very accomplished communicator and leader. As a professional speaker as well as the author ofThe Lazy Project Manager: How to be twice as productive and still leave the office early (Infinite Ideas) and ‘Leading Successful Pmos: How to Build the Best Project Management Office for Your BusinessThe Lazy Project Manager and the Project from Hell and his newest book The Social Project Manager: Balancing Collaboration with Centralised Control in a Project Driven World.

Research demonstrates over and over again that the life span of the typical PMO is incredibly short. On average, about two or three years.

What that means is that the organization creates a structure, finds it wanting, and abandons it—all within an astonishingly short time period.

While the averages are sobering, however, not all PMOs suffer the same fate. Some continue. Some are overwhelmingly successful.  Not many, perhaps, but enough.

In this webinar Mark Mullaly (LinkedIn profile) author of Researching the Value of Project Management  explores what sustainable, stable PMOs do differently to reach that vaunted status.

In this webinar, participants will:

  • Understand the challenges of developing PMOs
  • Explore the reasons that most PMOs don’t last
  • Identify the critical success factors behind PMO success
  • Evaluate what it takes to make the bridge from startup to stable

In today’s climate, the need to accelerate business transformation is seen as essential to underpin long term success. With a much higher rate of churn, a singular focus on successful project delivery is no longer enough to secure an organizations long-term position in the market.

With innovation, PMO is perfectly placed to evolve into a strategic enabler, accelerating the end-to-end business transformation process from strategy through to Innovation and Portfolio Delivery.

Leveraging Office 365, edison365 enables organizations to crowd-source ideas, rapidly justify business cases as well as swiftly implement projects.

Join edison365 for this informative webinar as we discuss successful business transformation with Office 365 and the wider Microsoft Stack.

Learn:

  • How to increase and accelerate innovation in your organization.
  • How improved portfolio prioritization improves your project delivery performance.
  • How to better govern benefits management; from business case to realization.
  • How you can benefit from governance, oversight and end-to-end management information.

Presenter: Tad Haas, (LinkedIn profile) Executive Vice President, edison365, is a passionate technology evangelist, experienced change agent and business builder. Tad’s long tenure at Microsoft helped him see what it means to transform and deliver at scale. A keynote speaker and a 20+ year member of PMI Tad has always strived towards the full picture of Strategy > Ideation > Justification > Delivery and Outcomes.
